Human rights activist Aminatou Haidar – stripped of her passport by Morocco and now on hunger strike in the Canary Islands – was today given a pledge of support by the European Parliament’s main progressive group, the Socialists and Democrats.
The S&D Group, whose leadership is holding talks with the incoming Spanish Presidency of the EU Council in Madrid, also supported efforts by Spanish foreign minister Miguel Angel Moratinos to resolve the situation and have her passport returned.
Ms Haidar claims she was expelled from Morocco without her passport after returning to the country from receiving a US award for her defence of the Western Sahara’s Sahrawi people.
Said S&D vice-president Veronique de Keyser: “We are deeply concerned about the treatment of Sahrawi activists in Morocco. We welcome the efforts of the Spanish government to find a solution.
“We join foreign minister Moratinos in calling on Morocco to return Ms Haidar’s passport and we express our solidarity with her at this difficult time.”
