Swoboda: Sarkozy's comments on Schengen are unacceptable - need for responsible action also in times of election campaigns

Today Hannes Swoboda, S-D Group Leader, commented on the latest speech given yesterday by French President Nicolas Sarkozy. With regard to the European issues addressed in this speech, Hannes Swoboda said:
"The latest statement from Sarkozy to possibly put Schengen on a halt clearly shows that Sarkozy feels being on the loser's side already. Nevertheless, such statements by a French President are scandalous, even in times of election campaigns. It is more than regrettable to see how much Sarkozy tries again and again to win votes among the nationalist and anti European electorate.
He added: "This might also be a reaction to the low level of success of the Merkozy strategy with the French voters in which Sakozy plays a minor role. However, even in election times we should expect a more responsible approach by a French President when speaking about Europe.
"It is unacceptable to play out France against Europe and vice versa".
