Socialist Euro MPs today, 8 November 2006, welcomed the American election results as "the beginning of the end of a six-year nightmare for the world" and described the Bush administration as "seriously weakened."
In a message of congratulations to the US Democratic Party and Nancy Pelosi, tipped to be the first woman Speaker of the House of Representatives, the president of the 201-strong European Parliament Socialist Group, Martin Schulz, said: "Your victory makes it possible for Europe and the United States to renew their partnership and prepare a dynamic and progressive agenda for peaceful, global development."
Mr Schulz called for a new policy direction from President Bush, founded on compromise and bipartisanship with the incoming Democrat majority.
Later today, Mr Schulz is to tell a meeting of his political group in Brussels: "For many years, the Bush administration’s policies have caused consternation to America’s allies and suffering to untold numbers of innocent people, particularly in the Middle East.
"European social democrats have worked hard to prevent widespread despair among European citizens at the aggressive foreign policy of the Bush administration turning into naked, and wholly unjustified, anti-Americanism. We are relieved that we now see the beginning of the end of a six-year nightmare for the world.
"The Bush administration is seriously weakened by this Democrat election victory.
"The Socialist Group will seek to further strengthen links with progressive forces in US politics. Our aim is to put the disasters of the Bush administration behind us and build a new future for the world."
